Kundan Shankar (Dhanush) is the son of a Hindu. Since his childhood days, Kundan has had a strong and obsessive one-sided love for Zoya Haider (played by Sonam Kapoor), a Muslim girl residing in Varanasi whose father is a professor. Though he sees her first as a child, Kundan is steadfast in his love for Zoya. He always attempts to be around her and hold her hand but gets slapped several times in the process. Zoya finally changes her mind because of Kundan's consistency of affection and attraction. Zoya's family is orthodox, preventing the lovers from being together. After Zoya moves to Aligarh for further studies, Kundan harmonises with Zoya's family, assisting them with various chores. Zoya gets into Jawaharlal Nehru University and discovers a long-lost strength as she confronts and then falls for student leader Akram Zaidi (Abhay Deol).
After a period of eight years, Zoya returns to Varanasi. She barely recognises Kundan when she meets him again. Kundan again attempts to ask Zoya for her love but she is reluctant, revealing that she is in love with Akram. Zoya then urges Kundan to convince her family about her marriage with Akram. Initially refusing because he still loves her, Kundan eventually agrees to it and sets about trying to convince Zoya's father of the match. Kundan gets the wedding of Zoya and Akram arranged. Kundan promises Zoya that he will also tie the knot with another girl and will forget her. Kundan proposes to his childhood friend Bindiya (Swara Bhaskar), who has had a crush on him since childhood.
On the day of their marriage, Kundan finds out that Akram is a Sikh, whose actual name is Jasjeet Singh Shergill. This enrages Kundan as Zoya had used their religious differences to convince him that their match was not possible. Kundan reveals everything to Zoya's parents thereby interrupting their marriage ceremony. Later, Kundan is informed by his friend that Zoya tried to commit suicide and is in a critical condition. He rushes to the hospital where he is also informed that Jasjeet was mercilessly beaten by Zoya's relatives. Kundan rushes to find him, along with his friend and Jasjeet's sister. At the hospital, Jasjeet talks to Kundan and says that despite Jasjeet's misgivings about the plan, Zoya convinced him to portray himself as Muslim to marry her, a plan he should not have agreed to as it was a lie. Kundan also forgets about his own marriage with Bindiya. For this reason, Kundan's family disowns him. Later, Jasjeet's parents take him back to his village. Kundan tries to redeem himself by taking Zoya to Jasjeet's village. However, he is devastated to find that Jasjeet has succumbed to his injuries, finally making Kundan understand that his one-sided love has resulted in an innocent man's death.
Kundan then becomes homeless and begins visiting various religious places and volunteering in their activities so that he can atone for his sins. During one such visit to the banks of Ganga, a man advises him to do the right thing rather than running away from his sins.
Motivated, Kundan locates Zoya to Jawahar Lal Nehru University, where she is spearheading the activities of the political party "All India Citizen Party" (AICP), created by Jasjeet. Kundan joins the nearby canteen and serves the people of the party, working at a tea-stall, all the while trying to get Zoya's attention. Over time, Kundan becomes popular among the party due to his simple nature. The party workers are impressed as Kundan also helps the party in negotiating some tough situations by using his simple yet witty tricks. Slowly, he emerges as a popular face of the party, disturbing Zoya. She holds a grudge that the person who is responsible for Jasjeet's death is now taking his place. She also tries to instigate party members against Kundan but Jasjeet's sister Rashmi (Shilpi Marwaha), who is also Zoya's best friend, tells Kundan to continue, as he is the best choice for fulfilling Jasjeet's vision.
Kundan, however, only wants Zoya to forgive him. His motive in being there, working for the party is to redeem himself in her eyes. The Chief Minister (Sujata Kumar) tells Zoya privately she must seek revenge on Kundan so as to take the place Jasjeet held for the AICP. To get back the position, she tells her to let Kundan get injured as he delivers his campaign speech for the party. Zoya apparently seems to get brainwashed by this plan and as the Chief Minister desired, Kundan is hurt badly and sent to ICU, thus fulfilling Zoya's revenge.
At a press meet following Kundan's injury, the chief minister denies having any hand in the blast that hurt Kundan. She says this can be confirmed by the fact that Zoya would now be joining their party. However, when Zoya steps forward, she reveals that the plan was plotted by her and the Chief Minister and that she is prepared to go to prison for this. Zoya leaves the press meet and finds out through a policeman that Kundan was aware of the plot and still let himself be injured. Shocked by this fact, she rushes to the hospital to be with Kundan.
In a final voice over, a dying Kundan wonders about letting go. He says he might have the desire to live again, if Zoya called out to him, but then again everything had become so tiring and he would rather let go and rest (euphemism for dying). He speaks of the nature of love that continues, by saying that he can be born again and again in the same Benaras with the same surroundings, fall in love with a girl like Zoya again, and become a Raanjhanaa in her love.

The film opens up by showing a large crowd outside the Verona Arena, Italy, with eager fans queuing for the rock concert of Jordan (Ranbir Kapoor). Jordan, who was being attacked by thugs moments ago, manages to escape and reach the arena. He shows a complete disregard for his fans, storms onto the stage in a fit of rage and starts strumming his guitar.
A flashback shows the story of Jordan, when he was Janardhan Jhakar a.k.a. JJ, a simple Haryanvi Jat from, Delhi, a student in Hindu College who dreams of becoming a big star and gets laughed at by his friends for that. Khatana, a canteen owner (Kumud Mishra), tells him that the only way melody can be produced is by undergoing trauma via a heartbreak. Janardhan jokingly tells himself that since he hasn't seen bad times, he hasn't been able to reach his idol's (Jim Morrison) level of fame. He goes to the performance of Heer Kaul (Nargis Fakhri), one of the girls in St. Stephens College, and overhears that she is the "perfect heartbreaking machine". Instantly deciding to propose to her, he suffers humiliation, which he deciphers as the perfect method for receiving the "heart-break" and the key to "fame". However, they both become good friends, hanging out together and doing things like drinking desi liquor and watching a B-grade Hindi film called "Junglee Jawaani"
Heer marries Jai (Moufid Aziz) in Kashmir and departs to Prague with him. During the process, she develops feelings for JJ and coins the name "Jordan" for him before leaving. JJ returns home finds himself thrown out by his elder brother for attending Heer’s wedding and stealing
500,000, which he actually did not take as he points out that the money has been stolen several times even in his absence. He takes refuge for two months in the nearby Nizamuddin Dargah, singing qawwalis and finally to Khatana's place, making it his home.
Ustad Jameel Khan (Shammi Kapoor), a Padma Bhushan classical artist, remembers JJ singing at the Dargah, and prompts Dhingra (Piyush Mishra), the owner of a music company called "Platinum Records", to sign JJ as he foresees a bright future for him. When Sheena (Aditi Rao Hydari), a journalist interviewing Jordan as a rockstar, hints to Jordan that Dhingra intends to send some artists to Prague for a tour and recordings, he instantly volunteers to work there to reunite with Heer.
Heer, meanwhile, suffers from continuous spurts of health problems. She meets JJ, and after a while of intimacy, when he tries to profess his love for her, Heer, being married, spurns his advances. Heer warns him to stay away from her and he decides to say "bye" one last time before departing for India. While doing so, Jordan trespasses on Heer’s property and is arrested by cops and deported to India. Upon being brought to India, he is overwhelmed by the media attention he receives. Frustrated, JJ clashes with the media and the Indian Police, resulting in a term in jail. Dhingra becomes happy about the publicity he has received because of JJ, as it has helped the sale of his records.
After being released, JJ goes on a country-wide tour for his concerts. He becomes famous as 'Jordan', and cancels the contract with Dhingra's company. He is now truly a 'Rockstar', which he wanted to be. He has fame, money, music, everything he craved for. But inside, he has become a lonely man. He constantly gets into fights with the media, which reveals he has become arrogant. His friends, who earlier made fun of him in college, now use his fame to click photos with him, which disturbs him. Khatana is now his manager, but fails to control him. In spite of all this, Jordan is highly popular among his fans.
Jordan meets Heer's younger sister Mandy during one of his performances. She asks him to help Heer, as she has been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. When Jordan goes to meet her, her mother, Neena Kaul (Shernaz Patel), gets angry and asks him to leave her house as she is aware of his past with Heer. To everyone's surprise, Heer starts recovering quickly due to Jordan's presence. He starts to spend more time with her disregarding all his work. Khatana requests Heer to persuade him to attend his concerts. During a visit to Kangra Valley, Heer accompanies him to one of his concerts where the media links them, portraying her as having an affair despite being married. Heer asks Jordan to take some time off and first finish his work before coming back to her. Her condition worsens ; she slowly slips into a coma, and is discovered to be pregnant with Jordan's child. Mandy calls him for one last time hoping that she will recover. However, her condition only worsens. Jordan goes while she is in a coma and realises that this time she is really gone. Heer dies offscreen, and a quick montage of shots follow, where Jordan is seen bearing the pain of heartbreak and becoming a famous international rockstar.
The movie then goes back to where it began, with Jordan, now as famous as his idol Jim Morrison, performing "Nadaan Parindey" in Verona Arena, Italy. During the song, Jordan while performing imagines Heer coming on stage and a recap of the happy times they spent together follows. The film ends with a line from Mawlana Jalal-ud-Din Muhammad Rumi's poem: "Away beyond all concepts of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field. I'll meet you there."

Her father arranges her marriage to Gautham (Surya Sivakumar) against her wishes. Both look gloomy during the wedding due to obvious reasons.
Six years later in Mumbai they have a 5-year-old daughter Aishu (Shriya Sharma) and live as a happily married couple. Gautham works as the chief mechanic at an automobile company and goes to New York for a short period. During this time, Kundavi comes across Gautham's old college diary. Gautham wanted to be an Engineer from a young age and forced his father's brother to pay for a seat in Coimbatore for Mechanical Engineering. From the second year of college he is the don. In college, he is attracted to Aiswarya (Bhumika Chawla), whose father is a Coimbatore MP. Gautham and Aishwarya fall in love and decide to get married. At the registrar's office after Gautham ties the knot, Aishwarya's father and his men beat him up, separating the lovers and sending Aishwarya off to Australia. At the end of the diary, Gautham writes a note: "if I have one wish, it would be to live with Aishwarya happily at least for one day."
Gautham returns from New York and finds his wife changed. She works late and avoids him. She finds Gautham's lost love Aishwarya, who had just returned from Australia. Aishwarya has become a modern girl in contrast to the demure salwar kameez girl she was in college. Kundavi asks Aishwarya to visit them and she tells her husband that he should live happily with Aishwarya for a day and that for that one day, she and their daughter do not exist for him, and leaves Gautham with Aishwarya.
That day Gautham spends with Aishwarya, Kundavi imagines them to have a good time and eventually fall in love with each other all over again. When she gets back home, dreading, she finds her husband alone at home. She asks about his day with Aishwarya, and he gives her a letter written to Kundavi from Aishwarya. In it, Aishwarya says that within five minutes of speaking to him, Gautham mentioned 'Kundavi' so many times that she realised that he loved his wife very much and is leading a very happy life. She wishes the couple a happy life and leaves, never to return.
